Jot down some notes that describe your current work environment, team dynamics, the organization’s management style, and daily routine.
- What do you value?
- What do you wish were different?
Now, imagine 2024.
- How do you feel when you think of another year devoted to your current role?
- How would you like this year to be different?
Reassess
“Reassess” means “to consider something again,” especially if new factors have come to light since you first assessed the issue. It’s okay to hit pause and reassess your path and your strengths and passions. Your career experience thus far has certainly brought new factors to light.
- What have you learned about yourself?
- What skills make you stand out?
- What would you describe as your “sweet spot” in your current role or a previous role?
- Describe a work task or project that has energized you.
- What are you passionate about?
- How can a career role align with those passions?
Ask your colleagues or friends and family to give you feedback. They can often more readily see what makes your eyes light up!
Research
Explore various career possibilities and industries that seem to align with what you envision for your future.
Use what you have at your fingertips. Take advantage of online resources and career websites. You can review job descriptions, required qualifications, and industry trends. You may discover a career path you wouldn’t have considered previously or didn’t know existed.
Use your network. Do you know someone who’s in a professional role that interests you? Treat them to lunch or coffee and find out more about their career.
